Therapists, reach out and help in Haiti.
If ever there was a time for the global community to come together, it is now. As you are all well aware, the country of Haiti was literally shaken to its core from a massive earthquake and the aftermath has left behind a land and its people in shambles. The response from around the world has been great and I hope that it continues for some time, as the country will need a tremendous amount of help to get it back to some sort of normalcy. As therapists, caring for others is not only your job but a way of life, a life you’ve chosen to make a difference in peoples lives.
It comes to no surprise that therapists and rehab specialists from all over are seeking out ways to help and at this time it seems as though the need for them has been stymied by the inability of reaching the country of Haiti in time. There are a number of relief efforts being organized from governed nations to the local Girl Scout troops, all of which are mostly raising funds to help. The donation of goods and labor are put on hold for now and what organizers feel would be best is that of cash funding. There will undoubtedly come a time when your expertise will be of great need, but for the time being please just give what you can by way of monetary donations. Check out the Haitian Relief Effort: How You Can Help section at APTA.org for organizations that are gathering funds to send on to Haiti.
Check out the blog Moving Forward where Chuck Gulas, PT has documented his experiences in the earthquake ravished island of Haiti.
The organization Health Volunteers Overseas is seeking out 15 Physical and Occupational therapy volunteers. The details of who they are seeking out are available here.
There are of course the usual relief outlets like the American Red Cross, Salvation Army, etc. that will have more information in ways in which you can help. If you know of any other organizations and causes that have formed to help with relief in Haiti, please post them in the comment section below. Thank you and God bless.
